AUSTRALIA'S ANNUAL DROWNING REPORT REVEALS RECORD LOW NUMBER OF DEATHS

* 249 people drowned in Australian waterways in 2017-18, a 14 per cent decrease on the previous year

* A further 551 people are estimated to have been hospitalised due to near-drowning incidents

* 72 per cent of those who died were men

* Rivers, creeks and streams accounted for 25 per cent of the drownings

* 18 children under five drowned, representing a 36 per cent reduction on a 10-year average

* 67 per cent of those under five who drowned were in swimming pools

REGIONAL BREAKDOWN

ACT

* Three drownings in 2017-18, all men and all occurring in inland waterways

NSW

* 87 drownings in 2017-18, the most of any state or territory

* Seven per cent reduction on last year and an 11 per cent reduction on 10-year average

* 75 per cent of drownings were men.

NT

* Seven drownings in 2017-18, a 13 per cent reduction on the previous year

* 71 per cent of those who drowned were aged 25-54

QLD

* 60 drownings in 2017-18, an 18 per cent reduction on previous year

* One-fifth occurred due to boating incidents

SA

* 15 drownings in 2017-18, the same number of deaths as the previous year

* Bathtubs and spa baths were the leading drowning sites (27 per cent)

TAS

* 10 drownings in 2017-18, a nine per cent reduction on previous year

* Boating-related incidents accounted for half the drownings

* 40 per cent of the drownings occurred in autumn

VIC

* 40 drownings in 2017-18, an 11 per cent reduction on previous year

* 73 per cent of drowning victims were men

WA

* 27 drownings in 2017-18, a 31 per cent reduction on last year

* Most drownings were in swimming pools

* A 47 per cent reduction in drownings for the 25-54 year age group on the five year average
