Flammable liquid storage cabinet - Chemicals to store and avoid

Almost all business and industrial facilities make use of flammable chemicals. Maintenance or cleaning divisions, operations and other facilities have a requirement to store and use the chemicals regularly.

Mechanics make use of battery acid, cleaning solvents, antifreeze and coatings in auto shops. You could also find many ignition sources present in the workshop environment. Tools, car engines and welding equipment might create sparks. Safe flammable chemical storage is important to prevent unforeseen incidents like injuries and fires.

Machine shorts make use of oil-based coolants in large quantities. All of them are flammable. Finished products usually get sprayed with coatings that protect them from rust. However, the coatings are flammable. Cutting, welding, grinding and torch cutting would generate sparks and heat in machine shops. Safety cabinets help segregate the ignition sources from flammable materials.

In a large scale industry set-up, other than flammable cabinets, you could also find various other safety equipment. However, if you are looking to buy various safety equipment such as flammable liquid storage cabinets or Spill Kits Australia, you could purchase it from the related dealers online. Have a look at this link if you are interested in buying a flammable liquid storage cabinet or any other related safety equipment for that matter.

What could you store in a flammable storage cabinet?

Flammable liquid storage cabinets could easily and safely store chemicals and liquids that are flammable. Flammable liquids could be defined by categories based on their flashpoints. However, it also includes classifications for combustible liquids.

Examples of chemicals divided into each category as per their strength and viscosity are as follows:

Category 1 - Heptane, Pentane

Category 2 - Acetone, Methanol, Petrol

Category 3 - Diesel, Turpentine, Kerosine

Category 4 - Mineral Oil, Linseed Oil

Safety cabinets can hold up to around 270 litres of category 1 2 and 3 flammable liquids. The limit rises to 540 litres for category 4 materials.

What should be strictly avoided from storing inflammable storage cabinets?

Some chemicals are not flammable but act as accelerants when they get exposed to fire. Oxidisers release oxygen which can intensify a fire.

You should refrain from storing incompatible chemicals together to prevent a reaction and possible explosion. If you make use of the wrong storage container within a safety cabinet, it could also be problematic. Seal the lids properly. Make use of the same material as the original packaging. Never store paper-based packaging materials like cardboard within a cabinet. They could become soaked with spilt chemicals leading to a fire hazard. https://www.spillstation.com.au/dangerous-goods-storage-cabinets/flammable-liquids-storage-cabinets/

Such substances should be segregated from flammable liquids by a specific distance or should be stored in separate cabinets.  They could be divided into various classes like Explosives, Gases, Flammable Solids, Oxidizing Agents, Toxic Substances, Organic Peroxides and Corrosive Substances. The substances are all incompatible with flammable liquids and should be segregated and stored or used. Flammable cabinets are like any other dangerous goods storage solution that is specifically designed and constructed to meet the requirements as per government regulations. You should always store the chemicals in a cabinet that is constructed specifically for such a class of dangerous goods.
