Starter Tips in Scented Candle Care

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

Scented candles are all the rage today. They're suitable for when you want relief and relaxation. Feeling stressed and want to be in a good mood? Light a candle. Scented candles come in different shapes, colors, and scents. But where and how do you start?

Scented candles also need maintenance, and burning them requires the right place and the proper condition. Here are a few tips for handling and taking care of your scented candles.

Get Candles of Your Preference

Choosing the candle is the first crucial step. A particular type of candle contributes to how you use and look after it. Here are some aspects you must consider when selecting your first scented candles.

Material. You may start with the material your candle is made out of. One can use several types of wax to make a candle, a popular one being paraffin wax. Another type is soy wax. Developed in the 90s, it is a wax that helps the candle last longer and is recently popular among candlemakers and customers. You can find the new soy candle collection among candlemakers and see great options.

Wick. If you aren't new to the candle world, you may recognize cotton being the most popular wick, as it is present in many candles. However, other materials are used as a wick, such as wood and paper. There are also types of wicks, like cored, flat braid, and others.

Scents. Scents are a crucial factor when you choose your candle. It honestly just boils down to preference. For first-time consumers, especially those with sensitive smells, it would help to go to a physical store and smell some of the samples to figure out better which scent is best for you. The smell should help relax you.

Place the Candle in the Best Area Possible

When you burn a scented candle, one thing that matters is the placement. Where are the best spots in your house to put your candle? And which ones do you avoid? Emphasis on the latter is necessary to avoid unwanted incidents.

Where should you put your candles? This will depend on three things: the purpose of buying the candle (specifically the scents you chose), the room that suits it the most, and the condition of said room. Lit or unlit, putting a candle in the right place is a game changer.

For example, you bought a candle to help you relax before sleep. You might pick an excellent scent to help you sleep, like lavender and chamomile. In this case, the bedroom is the most suitable room for this. However, where in the bedroom should you put the candle?

While you can put the candle in almost any of your rooms depending on your purpose, knowing where and where not your candle should sit is vital. For starters, do not place your lit candle anywhere delicate such as near fabrics like curtains, plants, where a lot of activity or movement occurs, or anywhere children can reach. Likewise, avoid placing it near flammable objects.

Generally, the best areas are well-ventilated sports and surfaces that are not sensitive to heat.

Burn for an Adequate Time

There is a limit to burning your candle. Regardless of the candles' size, they must not be consumed in one go. This is because you only have a certain amount of time to have them lit. Alternatively, lighting them up for a short time is fine.

The recommended maximum time limit for a candle to burn is 4 hours. If you want to light it up again, you must wait for two hours. If the manufacturer has provided special instructions regarding the burning limits of the candle, it is best to read them.

Leaving candles lit for too long can lead to a large flame. It can also lead to dangerous smoke and soot. In addition, the carbon buildup will be bad for the container as it may risk damage.

Trim The Wick

Before you give your candle another lighting up, you must trim its wick. This is one of the vital candle maintenance you must remember. You can cut the wick off with scissors or through a wick trimmer, a more convenient tool for candles in narrower containers.

But why should you do so? This is because leaving a used candle's wick untrimmed may lead to a higher flame height, making it burn more than it should. This will, in turn, make the candle too hot and would make it burn faster. It will also gather soot, which will make the containers black.

As long as the wick is trimmed every time the candle is used, you can make the candlelight a good flame height and make it last as long as possible. It has to be cut to at least ¼ of an inch.

Blow it Out and Keep it Cool

How do you put the light out when you're done burning your candle? Blowing it out is one option, but it can be dangerous as it could splatter hot, liquid wax. So instead, you can use three tools: a wick dipper, which bends the wick to the wax, so the flame extinguishes, a snuffer, a handle with a conical-shaped instrument, or the cover of the candle's container.

Depending on how long you've lit the candle, you need to leave it until it cools up. Once it is no longer hot, you can store it in a friendly, cool place. Avoid putting it in humid areas.

To Conclude

Scented candles are an excellent tool for you to relax and unwind for a while. But using them requires a lot of care. Do some research and ask for assistance when you get your candles for the first time.
