King vs. Queen: What’s the Difference?

The king and the queen mattress are the two most popular mattress sizes on the market. As the largest options available, they’re the most common choice for couples and singles who desire to have more sleeping space for themselves. Although they share some similarities, king and queen mattresses differ considerably. Upgrade your sleep with a Latex Mattress Santa Cruz, known for its durability and eco-friendly materials. This post explores the difference between a king and a queen mattress to help you choose the right option for your bedroom.

Difference between king and queen mattress dimensions

The difference between a king and a queen mattress is their dimension. More specifically, these mattress options differ in width, although they have the same length.

The queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long ( 5 feet by 6.6 feet). On the other hand, the king mattress is 78 inches wide and 80 inches long (6.5 feet by 6.6 feet). This leaves a difference of 16 inches between them.

Both mattress options can accommodate tall individuals. Their width is also big enough for two people. However, couples who prefer to have more space to themselves often prefer the king bed because of its width.

Choosing between a king and a queen bed - factors to consider

Bedroom size

A king-size mattress in a small room will leave little space for free movement and make the room look crowded. As a general recommendation, you should have at least 24-27 inches of walking space between your bed and the wall on all sides of your room. The implication is that your room has to be wider to accommodate a king-size bed than a queen bed. This means your bedroom only has to be 84 inches wide to fit a queen bed comfortably. However, it has to be up to 100 inches wide to fit a king-size mattress.

Sleeper count

Both king and queen beds can accommodate two people. However, a queen bed will generally be more comfortable for singles than it would be for couples. The king bed is the largest mattress, and it works great even for couples who want to snuggle in bed with a kid or pet.

Body dimensions and sleeping habits

The physical size of you and your partner is another factor that will determine which mattress size would work best for you. Couples with larger body dimensions or light sleepers who might be disturbed by having someone else too close to them might want to go for a king-sized mattress.

Budget

Finally, consider how much you’re willing to spend on the bed. Although mattress size depends on factors besides size, it is the most important point. A king bed will generally be more expensive than the same brand and model of a queen bed. Buying a bigger bed also means spending more on bed frames, bedding, and other accessories. So, if you’re on a tight budget, you might want to go for the queen mattress.
