Five Ways to Create a Non-Toxic Home

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

Creating a non-toxic home doesn’t have to be difficult and overwhelming. Start with a few changes. In no time, you will have a toxic-free environment. It's not an all-or-nothing ordeal; it happens gradually. However, it's still a serious matter that deserves your attention. The air you breathe, what you eat, and the things you come into contact with effect your general wellbeing. You are surrounded by toxins or chemicals in your home. Here is how you can reduce them and make your home healthier.

Enhance the Air Quality

You should think of ways to improve the air quality in your home. Ensure the house has enough ventilation. Candles, cooking, and cleaning products can pollute the air inside your house. It makes the environment very toxic unless you have enough ventilation.

You should also open doors and windows so that air can circulate inside the house. An interior barn door is chic and easy to open and close. You can keep every room in your house aerated at all times. An air purifier is also a great investment. With quality air, you can minimize allergies and the risk of getting ill. Plants are natural air purifiers and a great way to minimize toxins in your home.

Rethink How You Use Plastic

By using less or no plastic at all, you would have made your home safer. Opt for glass containers instead of plastic. That's one change you will love because glass is easy to clean, you can see what is stored, and it is durable. If you microwave most of the time, you should consider switching completely to glass. Plastics are more toxic when you place hot food directly on them or heat them.

When you switch to glass, you won't have to deal with BPA chemicals found in plastic. If you must, buy products with a BPA-free label on them. You can use plastic for foods that are cold or use them for unprocessed grains. It's tricky to stay away from plastic, especially when you mostly use packaged foods. But if you are determined, you can make the change and limit your exposure.

Ditch Your Shower Curtains

Vinyl shower curtains are very toxic in your home. PVC-free curtains are the best; they are equally functional but less toxic. They even make fabric and other non-plastic shower curtains. The small pollutants amount to high levels of chemicals in the house. Also, look at what your bath mats are made of. If it's vinyl, it's time to get new mats.

While you are making such changes, consider ditching your dryer sheets as well. Dryer balls made of wool are the best non-toxic options. Before taking drastic measures, you must ensure you make minor adjustments. When you are out shopping for home supplies, always think about the toxicity level of each item.

Look for Non-Toxic Paints

Paint can continue to pollute long after it has dried. It’s crucial to look for chemical and lead-free paints with low levels of volatile organic compounds. If you feel like the current paint in your house is part of the problem, you can repaint it. But ensure the paint you use this time is of the best quality and not harmful. Few established paint brands offer non-toxic products. Even if you adjust everything around the house, don't forget to clean regularly. Get rid of dust particles that can circulate in the house and compromise the air quality. You will love spending time in the house instead of hiding in the backyard all the time.

Be Cautious With Cleaning Supplies

It's easy to be loyal to one brand or trust what you find on the supermarket's shelves, but some cleaning products are harmful to your health. When you clean, you are exposing your loved ones to chemicals instead of keeping the house clean. If there are chemicals you know will be harmful, look for safer cleaning products.

There are thousands of chemicals in cleaning supplies, and only a few have been tested. It's up to you to decide what you want in your home and what you don't. If you can make soap, it's easier to control the ingredients you use. But if you can't, ensure you check each product's label to see what's included.

Maintaining a toxic-free home will be easy when you educate yourself and become more careful of what you allow into your home. Chemicals can have adverse effects in the long run if you don't do anything about them. You have to cut down exposure by all means. Start with these five tips and find other ways to create a healthier home.
