Changes to restrictions on lead in tap water are on the way – and they’re set to make drinking water safer for Australians.

Updates to the Federal Government’s WaterMark Certification Scheme, which dictates the minimum standards for products used in drinking water systems, take effect on 1 May 2026. From this date, new plumbing products installed in drinking water systems will need to comply with the updated definition of ‘lead free.’ This means that no more than 0.25% of the material in the product can be lead, a level that aligns us with the United States’ stricter definition of ‘lead free.’ 

Wait…There Could Be Lead in My Tap Water?

When you turn on the tap to pour a glass of water, lead exposure is probably the last thing on your mind, right? After all, surely the days of lead leaching into drinking water pipes are long gone?

While the use of lead pipes for plumbing has been phased out since the 1930s, and the use of lead for soldering copper pipes stopped in 1989, it may surprise you to know that there is still lead in Brisbane tap water.

In some homes where plumbing systems haven’t been upgraded in a long time, old products containing high levels of lead can still be found. Admittedly, this isn’t very common, with many systems having been updated, at least partially, throughout the years. 

Imports Manufactured Under Lax Lead Regulations

Of greater concern is the influx of cheap imports from countries where manufacturing regulations on lead use are far less stringent. 

While it may be tempting to grab a bargain tap that looks like a million bucks from a discount store or online retailer, when it comes to water safety, it’s advisable to give it a miss. 

“Australia's bringing its regulations into line with more stringent international standards. The level of lead in your glass now is still well within safety standards. The risk comes from plumbing fixtures imported from countries with lax standards. If in doubt, let your taps run a little before filling the kettle in the morning," said John Salmon, Master Plumber Brisbane.
