From the Spring Plant Sale to a dinosaur exhibit, Powell Gardens has something for just about everyone in May, including a special day for mom! Admission, unless otherwise noted, is $10/adults, $9/seniors 60+, $4/children 5-12, and free/members and children 4 and younger. 

Spring Plant Sale 

  • Members-only Plant Sale Preview & Reception: 4-7 p.m. May 6
  • Public Sale: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 7-8
Gardening with Purpose is the theme of this year's sale, which features promising new plants and the best of the tried and true. The Gardens' horticulture employees selected the plants, which include unique edibles, perennials for sun and shade, annuals and more. In keeping with the theme, there are plants that attract pollinators, those that tolerate heat and drought, and others that resist diseases and pests. See the plant lists so you can start planning your trip. 

Need advice on what to plant? Powell Gardens' horticulture employees will be available to assist you throughout the sale. 

Shop early for the best selection. Members of Powell Gardens get first pick on May 6 with a members-only reception at 4 p.m. and sale from 5-7 p.m. The public sale is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 7 and 8. Garden admission applies. 

Bonsai Society of Greater Kansas City's Spring Exhibit 

10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 6-8

Learn about the living art of bonsai during the Bonsai Society of Greater Kansas City's spring exhibit at Powell Gardens. Society members will showcase a variety of trees and be available to answer questions during the exhibit. At 1:30 each afternoon, bonsai expert Kathy Schlesinger will give a presentation on caring for bonsai trees. Garden admission applies. 

Iris Weekend 

9 a.m.-6 p.m. May 7-8*

See hundreds of award-winning irises (the official flower of Kansas City, Mo.) blooming on Iris Hill. Garden admission applies. *We predict this weekend will be the peak bloom. Please check Powell Gardens' Facebook and Iris Hill pages for updates or call 816-697-2600 before you head out. Garden admission applies. 

Mother's Day Performance and Brunch 11 a.m.-3 p.m. May 8 

Powell Gardens celebrates Mother's Day with a reservation-only brunch in Café Thyme and a live performance by Victor & Penny in the open-air Missouri Barn from 1-3 p.m. The concert is included with Garden admission. 
Prepaid reservations are required for brunch, and there are still openings at 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. To make reservations, call 816.697.2600 x209 or visit powellgardens.org/MothersDay. Brunch prices include admission to the Gardens: 
  • Non-members: $30/adults and $14/children 5-12 (free for kids 4 and younger) 
  • Members: $25/adults and $12/children 5-12 (free for kids 4 and younger) 
Guests are welcome to bring picnics to enjoy on the Missouri Barn terrace during the performance by Victor & Penny. (Outside alcohol is not permitted; beer and wine are sold at reFresh in the Missouri Barn.) Learn more about Mother's Day activities. Garden admission applies. 

Jurassic Garden: A Prehistoric Adventure Opens! 

9 a.m.-6 p.m. May 21 

Dinosaurs are returning to Powell Gardens! Stroll through the Gardens to find 18 incredibly realistic dinosaur replicas in 11 settings. Guy Darrough from Lost World Studios in Arnold, Mo., created the sculptures, which include a ferocious 32-foot T Rex and more. Kids can test their paleontology skills at the fossil dig, dino lab and discovery stations. Jurassic Garden is open May 21 through October 3, 2016. Kansas City Cactus & Succulent Society Show and Sale 

9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 21 

Kansas City Cactus & Succulent Society members will have a display of some of their favorite plants and a great selection of succulents for sale. They will also be happy to answer questions related to caring for these plants. Included with Garden admission. 

Roanoke Park Tree Walk with Alan Branhagen (off-site event) 

1-3 p.m. May 22

Horticulture Director Alan Branhagen will be your guide as you explore the incredible trees in and around Roanoke Park in Kansas City, Mo. The tour fee is $7/person (free for members of Powell Gardens). Space is limited, so registration is required. Call 816.697.2600 x209 to reserve a spot. This is the first of four 2016 Kansas City Tree Walks with Alan. 

Garden Chef Series Cooking Demonstration by Cody Hogan, Lidia's Chef de Cuisine 

2-3 p.m. May 29

Avid gardener and Lidia's Chef de Cuisine Cody Hogan kicks off the 2016 Garden Chef Series with a cooking demonstration in the Heartland Harvest Garden, the nation's largest edible landscape. Hogan will prepare a dish showcasing garden-fresh ingredients. A limited number of samples will be available. Garden admission applies. 

Missouri Barn Dinner with Kansas City Canning Co. Owners Laura and Tim Tuohy

6 p.m. May 29

Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel Memorial Day Concert

2-3 p.m. May 30 

Musician Roger Pitts will perform an all-acoustic guitar set in the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel from 2-3 p.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2016. The performance is included with Garden admission.
