Partners Kick Off Effort with Donation of More Than 10,000 Canned Goods

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (October 7, 2015) – The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Myrtle Beach Area Recovery Council today announced the start of a canned food drive to assist South Carolina area residents who were significantly impacted by the recent storms.

The initial donation goal is to secure 10,000 or more canned goods, and the partners hope this is just the beginning.

As part of the Myrtle Beach Area Recovery Council’s efforts, City of Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes will be working with Horry County Council Chairman Mark Lazarus, North Myrtle Beach Mayor Marilyn Hatley and Surfside Beach Mayor Doug Samples to encourage area municipalities, businesses, schools and chambers to assist in this effort.

“The city of Myrtle Beach was very fortunate as it avoided the devastation much of the rest of our state has experienced,” said John Rhodes, mayor of the City of Myrtle Beach. “This is just a small way our community can come together to help the people in Charleston, Columbia and even our neighboring Conway, South Carolina, as they quickly work to get back to normal.”

Donations of canned goods will be accepted at various locations throughout the month of October. Local residents and visitors are also encouraged to donate, and will find a current list of drop-off locations at www.MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com. For other ways to assist, including cash donations, visit www.MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com or www.SCEMD.org.

“As our beach-like weather returns to Myrtle Beach, we expect a busy travel weekend as usual,” said Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. “We hope the many visitors coming in this next week and the residents who call Myrtle Beach home will give thanks for our weather, while helping us give back to the communities who weren’t as fortunate.”

All major thoroughfares into Myrtle Beach, including Highway 17 and Highway 22, are operational with traffic moving in all directions. For more information on the Myrtle Beach area go to www.visitmyrtlebeach.com.
