JOEY LOGANO WINS BANK OF AMERICA 500 AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY, EARNS AUTOMATIC BERTH IN SPRINT CUP SERIES ELIMINATOR ROUND
Wiley X®-Sponsored Driver Dominates Contender Round Opener, Leading for 227 of 334 Laps
Not even a heavy rain Saturday night could extinguish Wiley X® sponsored NASCAR driver Joey Logano’s hot streak over the final weeks of the 2015 season — as he dominated the rain-postponed Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 11, leading the field for 227 or the race’s 334 laps of the 1.5-mile track.
The win at Charlotte was Logano’s fourth of the 2015 season and the 12th of his young Sprint Cup Career. However, this was his first at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The victory was notable not only for this, but also because it gives Logano immunity from elimination in the three-race Sprint Cup Championship Contender Round. He will automatically be one of the final eight eligible drivers advancing to the Eliminator Round. He also won the opening race of last year’s Contender Round at Kansas Speedway, although fellow Wiley X-sponsored driver Kevin Harvick® was eventually crowned 2014 Sprint Cup Champion.
While there is much racing left to do, Harvick certainly won’t give up his crown to anybody without a fight. A week after claiming victory in a must-win race at Dover International Speedway to stay alive in the Chase, Harvick was nipping at Logano’s bumper through much of the Bank of America 500 to claim a 2nd Place finish .704 seconds behind the winner. Carl Edwards, also sponsored by Wiley X, took 6th Place at Charlotte and is also alive in the 2015 Sprint Cup Championship playoffs. Perennial front-runner and fan favorite Matt Kenseth, also a member of “Team Wiley X,” started on the Pole and led early at Charlotte for 72 laps before a series of crashes eventually ended his day. Both racing fans and other drivers alike know, however, that it would be a mistake to ever count Kenseth out while he has a fighting chance. The final Contender Round races take place over the next two weekends at Kansas Speedway and the always challenging Talledega Superspeedway.
“This was a great win for Joey, as well as for all the racing fans here at Wiley X Eyewear,” said Wiley X Co-Owner Myles Freeman, Jr. “We have a lot to cheer for over the coming weeks as the world’s best drivers compete to crown one champion. As we watch and enjoy every race, it’s humbling to know we have a small role in the success of these world-class athletes,” added Freeman.
