7 tips to sleep in the heat

  • Written by: News Company

Everyone needs sleep and the older we get the more we feel like we need. Now if you are a parent like me good sleep is hard to come by and our children often do not want to sleep as we want them too. Sleep is critical for us to be able to rest our bodies after a long hard day at work and to rejuvenate ourselves overnight. This is why many people turn to supplements that help them sleep, such as CBD gummies, as melatonin and CBD are in close connection with one another. As melatonin is the hormone that is related to your sleep schedule, CBD products allow this to be balanced, therefore giving you a better night's sleep.

For some, getting a good night sleep is as easy as 1, 2, 3 and for others it is a real battle to get the quality sleep that we need. Many factors can affect this, your kids keep you up at night, you are stressed, you are thinking ahead to what you have to do at work the next day or simply because it is in summer and it is too hot to sleep.

Trying to sleep when it is hot as night is a tough task. You can not sleep with your covers on as some people do, even my wife does it when it is 30 plus degrees. You sweat, it is just downright awkward to get to sleep and even if you do it is a restless sleep. In this article we will look at some ways that could possibly help you trying to get good, quality sleep when it is hot at night.

Keep the house cool.

This first one is basically a no brainer for everyone. If your house or apartment has an air conditioner use it, that is what they are there for. Hopefully, it is located in a good area of your house so it can get to every room or if you have ducted heating and cooling that is even better as it will definitely get to every room. Now if you do not have an air conditioner then most people must use a fan. It will not do that same job as the air con, but it is a good substitute. You might even have to use multiple fans so everyone in your house stays cool.

Showering can help you sleep better.

Now personally this does not work for me as it usually makes me warmer but for most people having a shower right before they go to bed can make them sleep better. This is especially true for my young son as within 10 or so minutes after his shower at night he is struggling to keep his eyes open and he is well and truly ready for bed. Experts say for best results have a shower that is not too cold and not too hot but rather in between the two as either a cold or hot shower will essentially keep your body in alert mode and in turn will make it tough to get to sleep.

Limit how much clothing you wear to bed

This next one is a no brainer too. The less clothes or PJ’s you wear to bed normally the cooler you are and the more you wear the warmer you get. In summer it is almost universal that people sleep in a lot less clothing as it is more comfortable and makes it easier to sleep. Some simply just wear underwear while others wear shorts and singlets and it just works for them and others sleep completely naked as it is just far more comfortable. So, limiting the amount of clothing you wear to bed can help you sleep better during the summer months.

Change the location of your bed.

If your bed is right in front of windows that have direct sunlight coming straight onto your bed then just for the summer months, it might be a good idea to shift your bed to a different area of your bedroom. Also, as we know hot air tends to rise and if you are lucky enough to have a house that has two stories then common sense suggests that having your bed on the bottom floor will be make your room cooler than if your bedroom is upstairs. Understandably some people can not move their beds drastically, but any change could end up helping you sleep better at night.

Be by yourself at night.

Now for some people who are married or have partners this is basically impossible but if you do happen to have a spare room it might be beneficial for both of you. As you know during winter, your body heat can help keep each other warm while you are in bed, but in summer you definitely do not want that extra heat while you are trying to sleep. It might start an argument as to who gets kicked out of bed, but it could help both of you keep cool while getting a good, comfortable nights sleep.

Get yourself a proper mattress

Now if you want to have a quick and easy way to keep yourself cool then perhaps purchasing a new mattress that has a neat feature. The ability to keep you cool while you sleep on it. There are multiple mattresses that have this ability but to find the right one for you and your partner you will have to shop around. Visit  Sleepify to see the wide range of mattresses that are available to you. Getting a mattress that has this cooling ability might cost you a few extra dollars, but it will be worth it when you are sleeping comfortably in those hot summer nights.

Be creative when trying to keep cool

If you do not have an air conditioner or fans and you simply cannot justify paying a lot of money for a cooling mattress then you will have to get creative in how you stay cool. You can use ice packs at night, or do what my wife did while she was pregnant and have a few face washers or towels that have been put in cold water and put them on your head or body to lower your temperature. When doing this though keep in mind to sleep on a towel or something similar so you do not ruin your mattress as it will get really wet over night. Another option is to purchase a cheap fan that blows mist around your room thanks to the compartment that you and fill up with water.

So, if you are cooler in bed then you will have a better sleep at night. Ultimately it is up to you on how you choose to keep you and your family cool during summer but with these few tips, sleeping in the hot summer nights can be made a whole lot easier.
