How to Treat Yourself During Menopause

  • Written by: Shan Ge

Menopause, or "the change of life," comes with disturbances and symptoms that are far from appealing, from hot flashes and insomnia to night sweats and mood swings. Dealing with menopause symptoms like these, it's all too easy to let yourself wallow and disregard your healthy routines and self-care efforts. But there's no time in life when it's more important to treat yourself.

By implementing changes, sticking to your best habits, and generally taking care of yourself through the menopause transition, you'll not just feel better at the moment—you'll even find yourself with less severe symptoms.

Count on conventional self-care.

During menopause, you might struggle to keep up with your go-to self-care habits. Some of your symptoms, like insomnia and other sleep disturbances, can even take away from the most straightforward aspects of wellness, like good sleep quality and general quality of life. The most basic tasks, though, may very well take care of you and your body best.

Schedule a facial to help yourself relax, or spend an entire day at a spa for an opportunity to unwind more deeply. A mud mask might not stop your menopause symptoms, but it's one sort of self-care that lets menopausal women take control of their health and wellness once more.

Adjust your routines.

If you've thrived on six hours of sleep throughout your adult life, you might need a full eight hours (or more) in bed now to compensate for the decreased sleep quality menopause creates. If you're still facing fatigue all day but bedtime, consider adding menopause sleep aids to your evening routine.

Look for ingredients like melatonin and magnesium and leave poor sleep in the past. A similar process applies to any side effect you're facing—supplements may help balance your hormones, act as a natural antidepressant, or offer relaxing benefits.

Always consult with your doctor before taking new supplements.

Maintain healthy habits.

If you've had healthy habits throughout your life, facing menopause doesn't mean you should let them fall to the wayside. After a lifetime of minimizing your caffeine intake, don't start drinking a few extra cups of coffee because of your menopause-induced fatigue. Do what you can to get a good night's sleep, maintain a healthy diet, and keep up with regular exercise efforts. More generally, do what you can to stay generally happy and healthy!

Stop bad habits.

While midlife is no time to quit your healthy habits, there's no better time to cut out those that aren't beneficial. If you deal with vices like smoking, binge drinking, or consuming too much junk food, work to cut them from your life. Not only can you decrease your menopause symptoms—these lifestyle changes will minimize your risk factors for conditions like heart disease, stroke, or cancer.

Include your mind as well as your body.

Between combatting the side effects of menopause and working to keep yourself from falling into unhealthy habits, it would be easy to disregard your emotional needs. Menopause often includes depressive symptoms and other mood concerns. Even if you don't face these particular issues, you might find your mental health suffering due to your other symptoms. Consider taking up yoga or meditation or working with a professional to keep your mental health in check throughout the stages of menopause and beyond.

Menopause is a significant part of a woman's life, but it doesn't need to be entirely negative. You might find yourself with more wrinkles, poor sleep quality, or other irritations. But, with the proper care and positive habits, you can treat yourself to a period of unprecedented self-care. Whether it's a spa treatment or a medication to ease your sleep problems, the right self-care efforts can help menopause be a less stressful period of your life.
