How To Live An Eco-friendly Lifestyle

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle is slowly gaining more popularity as people become more aware of global problems, like climate change, fossil fuel shortage, and food waste.

This conscientious way of living is perhaps one practical solution that, if magnified, creates a dent in these environmental issues. It’s not easy to detach yourself from the programmed lifestyle you’ve had ever since, but it’s worth trying for the sake of future generations.

So, for those who are thinking of embarking on this journey towards a greener society, here’s how to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.

  • 1. Invest In Reusable Items

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle entails being intentional with the things you buy. It may be convenient for the short term to purchase single-use items, like bottled water, paper coffee cups, or menstrual products. Still, the long-term harm these disposable items can do to your health and the environment can be disastrous.

To start living an environmentally friendly life, go for reusable items, such as custom keep cups and reusable menstrual pads. Or you can install a water filter and use refillable water jugs and bottles. Some reusable items may cost more than disposable stuff, but it will be worth staying committed to an environment-friendly lifestyle. Besides, adding a bit more to your budget won’t hurt.

  • 2. Save Energy

Another way you can live greener is to save energy. Cutting down your energy use is an excellent way to reduce carbon emissions.

Switching off lights, unplugging devices on standby, opening your blinds or curtains to let sunlight stream in, or drying your clothes outside rather than using a drier will significantly lower your energy consumption.

If you have a budget allocated to replace appliances you have at home, you may want to look into energy saving devices, like air-conditioning units and refrigerators that run on inverters.

  • 3. Don’t Waste Food

Food waste is a problem for both the environment and society. So much resources are allocated to growing, harvesting, packaging, and transporting food just for the production of one-third of all the food in the world, but this food only ends up in landfills or is left to rot.

Instead of having enough food for the increasing population of the world, countries would need to think of ways to feed their people without wasting more of what’s already produced. As an individual who’s committed to doing their part, you may want to consider the following steps to help alleviate this problem:

  • * Use your freezer to extend the shelf life of food.
  • * Plan ahead, so you can be intentional with the food you buy and prevent unnecessary purchases.
  • * Be creative with leftovers to avoid spoilage. You can look for methods to use fruits and vegetables that are already browning, beyond ripe, or wilting.

  • 4. Grow Your Food

Growing your food, like vegetables and fruits, is a good opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint while saving money. There are many ways to start a garden, even if you live in urban areas where there’s less space.

Window sill boxes or container gardens are just some examples of how you can utilize the available space inside and outside your home. Not only will you enjoy the fruits of your labour, but you’ll also brighten up your surroundings and filter the air that goes into your home.

  • 5. Drive Less

Did you know that as of 2019, there are more than a billion motor vehicles in the world?

These vehicles may have given people a way to travel conveniently. However, carbon emissions from these vehicles are harmful. Instead of taking your car to a place that’s close by, why not walk or ride a bike? Consider taking public transport too.

When you have to drive, try to maximize your vehicle by ensuring that all your tires are correctly inflated and that the engine runs smoothly.

  • 6. Save Water

Saving water can be as simple closing your faucet properly and using greywater to water your plants or clean exterior parts of your home. You can buy energy-efficient dishwashers and washing machines as well if you wish to save water and energy. Other habits you might want to practice to conserve water include monitoring your plumbing system regularly and fixing damages or leaks as soon as possible.

  • 7. Recycle

Recycling has always been part of the eco-friendly lifestyle. This practice helps reduce pollution by lessening the extraction and processing of raw materials, which causes different types of pollution. Adopting this habit means using water containers like pots, composting, supporting slow fashion, or buying upcycled items.

  • 8. Buy Local

Buying local is an effective way to kill two birds with one stone. Choosing imported products isn’t good for the environment because goods and items shipped from other places involve the use of fuel for transport.

What you can do instead is to support products that are locally sourced and made. This simple but meaningful act will not only lower carbon emissions but also strengthen the local economy.

Conclusion

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle is a commitment. It isn’t hard to do at all. You just have to form eco-friendly habits and stick with them.
