Moving From Australia to Wellington: The Practical Settling-In Checklist

Sunset Harbor Cityscape and Green Hills

Wellington has a lot going for it. It's compact, walkable and full of cafes, with a harbour that rivals anything on the Australian coast. For Australians relocating for work, the move is made easier by the trans-Tasman arrangement that lets Australian citizens live and work in New Zealand without applying for a visa.

That said, a few things work differently once you cross the Tasman, and some of them catch new arrivals off guard. Here's a practical checklist to help you settle in without surprises.

Finding Somewhere to Live

Most people rent first, and that's a smart approach. Wellington's suburbs vary a lot in sun, wind exposure and commute times, and spending a few months in the city helps you work out where you actually want to be.

When you rent, look closely at heating, insulation and dampness. New Zealand has Healthy Homes Standards for rental properties covering heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and draught stopping, so ask the landlord how the property meets them.

Buying a Home in Wellington

If you decide to buy, it pays to understand the local housing stock. Wellington has many older weatherboard homes built on steep sections, and the city sits in an active earthquake zone. Homes from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s can also carry a risk of weathertightness problems, a period New Zealanders associate with the leaky homes issue.

A pre-purchase inspection is the best way to understand what you're buying. A qualified inspector will look at the roof, cladding, foundations, subfloor, moisture levels and any signs of past repairs. Look for experienced building inspectors in Wellington who report against the New Zealand standard for residential property inspections, NZS 4306:2005, and who are happy to explain their findings in plain language.

Alongside the inspection, ask your conveyancer about the Land Information Memorandum, known as a LIM. It's a council report that can show consents, known hazards and other information about the property. Buying conditionally on a satisfactory inspection and LIM gives you room to walk away or renegotiate if something serious turns up.

Getting on the Road

Wellington's public transport works well for the central city, but many people want a car for weekends on the Kāpiti Coast or in the Wairarapa.

Australians can usually drive in New Zealand on a current Australian licence for up to 12 months from arrival. After that, you'll need to convert to a New Zealand licence. Australian licence holders can generally convert without sitting the full set of tests, but check the current requirements with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency before your 12 months are up.

Car Insurance Works Differently

This one surprises a lot of Australians. In New Zealand, car insurance isn't compulsory. There's no equivalent to the compulsory third party insurance bundled with Australian registration, because personal injury from road accidents is covered by ACC, the national no-fault accident compensation scheme. A portion of your vehicle licensing fee goes toward ACC.

That doesn't make insurance unnecessary. ACC covers injuries, not damage to cars or property. If you cause an accident and damage someone else's vehicle, you could be personally liable for the repair bill. Most drivers take out at least third party property cover, and many choose comprehensive cover.

When you start comparing car insurance in New Zealand, look at the excess, whether a hire car is included after an accident, how windscreen claims are handled and whether your Australian driving and claims history will be recognised. Some insurers accept proof of a claim-free record from overseas, which can reduce premiums.

Banking and Tax Setup

Opening a New Zealand bank account is usually one of the first jobs. Many banks let you start the process before you arrive, although you'll need identification and proof of address to finish it.

You'll also need an IRD number, which is New Zealand's equivalent of a tax file number. Without one, your employer will deduct tax at a higher rate. Apply through Inland Revenue as soon as you have a bank account and your passport details ready.

Remember to tell the Australian Taxation Office and your Australian providers about the move. Whether you remain an Australian tax resident depends on your circumstances, and getting advice early can save headaches later.

Health and Everyday Admin

Australians living in New Zealand can generally access publicly funded health services if they intend to stay for two years or more. Enrol with a local GP practice soon after arriving, since some practices have waiting lists.

Other jobs for the first few weeks include setting up power and internet, updating your address with Australian accounts and registering to vote if you're eligible.

Preparing for Wellington Weather

It's worth mentioning the weather. Wellington is known for strong winds, and conditions can change fast. A proper rain jacket is more useful than an umbrella. When house hunting, check whether outdoor areas are sheltered and whether the home gets winter sun.

Final Thoughts

Moving to Wellington is easier than most international moves, but it still pays to plan. Sort your housing carefully, understand how driving and insurance work, and get your banking and tax details in place early. Once those basics are covered, you'll have more time to enjoy everything the capital has to offer.
