Vibrant beauty: 5 reasons why you should use garden planter boxes

  • Written by NewsServices.com

Garden planter boxes are wonderfully ideal for the modern backyard. If you love gardening and want to switch it up a bit, then you can enlist these stunning additions to plant flowers, produce and even trees!

So, why are raised garden planter boxes ideal for Aussie homes? Here are five awesome reasons to ponder them for your backyard:

  1. They are better for your soil

These planter boxes - included in a raised bed - make it much easier for you to grow your plants. This is because you won’t have to till up the soil or add amendments and fertilisers, instead just putting more material on top to ensure that there is healthy growth occurring.

Mulches, compost, manures and other materials can go directly on top of the soil without hurting your back. What’s more, the soil can easily till itself as roots and worms work their way through, and this, in essence, alleviates the need to use your hands to till the soil - something that can deplete its structure as time goes on!

  1. It’s better for the back

You would be shocked at just how many people injure their backs (and other body parts) planting, tilling and weeding their property backyards! This is even the case for young professional gardeners, who can also succumb to the nuisance of getting up and down off the ground to continue their work.

But raised beds are designed to be easier on the back, instead allowing you to work more or less with a straight back, especially as you can keep adding new materials on top!

  1. They are aesthetically gorgeous!

Raised beds look wonderful - it’s as simple as that! And whilst this may seem vain, their benefits don’t just end at their aesthetic - as they can also be planted on your nature strip, thus making it easier for neighbours and other passersby to distinguish between what is the footpath and what has obviously been planted and doesn’t warrant inadvertent (or intentional!) trodding.

  1. They help keep pests at bay

Slugs and other cheeky pests don’t mind getting their climb on, but raised beds can go a long way to deter these troublesome little critters from causing a ruckus in your garden. You can border them with copper flashing, which most gardeners swear by when it comes to keeping slugs at bay.

You can also place hardware cloth on the box’s floor to catch other critters from stealing crops. What’s more, you won’t have to worry about dogs doing their business on your beds, as they’re height should even inhibit a Great Dane from going for it on your freshly planted tomatoes!

  1. They produce better drainage

If your home and area is susceptible to flooding or in a marshy location, raised beds can still allow for a proper growing season. They typically contain a depth of 11”, with a 12” high box bordering the growth. This is generally enough to allow for drainage, and provides the garden with plenty more breathing space in wet conditions. What’s more, this style typically allows for greater drainage after a heavy storm period!

As you can see, there are numerous, awesome advantages to installing these awesome backyard boxes. They can beautify your space whilst providing an incredibly practical method for growing pretty much whatever you want at home!

For these reasons and more they have become one of the most popular modern gardening methods for Aussie homes!
