The chemical is extensively used as an antiseptic and disinfectant, and for treating conditions such as suppurativa, hidradenitis, and psoriasis. It is the primary adhesive in tires and other fiber reinforced rubber goods. Apart from its use in preparation of dyes, it is used in the formulation of a wide range of fire retardants.
