LOS ANGELES – Given the climate of police brutality in the Black community, and the rise of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, Marcus Books will host a discussion and booksigning, featuring authors who are experts in law enforcement and the legal system. Retired Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey of the LAPD is the author of “The Creation of a Manifesto: Black & Blue” (Universal Kingdom Print; on sale July 13, 2013; ISBN-10: 0615844138; ISBN-13: 978-0615844138; $19.25 paperback/$4.99 e-book; 248 pages) and attorney Eric Broyles co-wrote and self published the book “Encounters With Police: A Black Man’s Guide to Survival” (on sale January 17, 2015; ISBN-10: 0986429503; ISBN-13: 978-0986429507; $12.95 paperback/$5.99 e-book; 106 pages).

Both Dorsey and Broyles will discuss recent incidents, police practices and proactive measures to survive police encounters. The booksigning will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Marcus Books, located at 3900 M.L.K. Way in Oakland, Calif.

In 2009, the national spotlight hit Oakland, Calif. with the shooting death of Oscar Grant III at the hands of a BART police officer on New Year’s Day, resulting in riots and protests. Video of his death at the Fruitville BART Station was captured on cell phones by passengers, and the incident served as the basis for the critically-acclaimed film “Fruitville Station,” starring Michael B. Jordan. Since his death, there have been many high-profile killings of unarmed African Americans involving law enforcement, including Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla.; Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.; Eric Garner in New York City; Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Md.; Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio; and Sandra Bland in Waller County, Texas – just to name a few.

In response to the increasing number of deaths of African Americans due to the deadly force of police, both Dorsey and Broyles will share their insider’s knowledge as experts in law enforcement and the legal system, respectively. Their advice on surviving police encounters promises to educate, inform and empower readers.

ABOUT ERIC BROYLES | author of “Encounters With Police: A Black Man’s Guide to Survival”

Broyles is a Washington, DC-based attorney and entrepreneur. Interestingly, he’s been on both sides of the law as a juvenile delinquent and as a lawyer at a large prestigious law firm. He began his career as a corporate attorney – that is, an associate of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in the Washington, DC office.  He also served as corporate counsel for AOL, Inc. and AOL Time Warner, Inc. in the capacity of senior counsel.  Broyles worked as a judicial law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit for the Honorable Joseph W. Hatchett, the chief judge.  He’s used his legal mind to represent indigent clients on a pro bono basis, including civil rights cases.

He is passionate about sharing his wisdom and insights with youth, particularly Black males, who may believe that the odds are against them, much like he did as a teen. He is the author of “Encounters With Police: A Black Man’s Guide to Survival,” which offers advice to African-American boys and men on how to survive police encounters.

The book also provides information on the legal and administrative rights that citizens have to redress police misconduct, preventing an escalated incident. Plus, it also gives a practical step-by-step guide on how to respond to police when pulled over for traffic stops and questioning outside of traffic encounters.

Broyles has appeared on various media outlets, including Fox News, NPR’s “All Things Considered,” ION TV and featured in Newsweek magazine.  He’s been a guest speaker at many schools, youth groups, churches, universities, and trade associations across the nation.
