New works by Miami-artist Enma Saiz will be on display BIG!, a group exhibition at the ArtServe Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The show, which features stunning large-scale works of art, will run from September 30 through October 30, 2015 with an opening reception on Thursday, October 8 from 6-8pm. Two pieces of Saiz’s work, “Eleven Twenty-Seven” and “She Is A Pill”, will be on exhibit. For more information on Enma Saiz, visit http://www.saizfineart.com.

“This exhibition features works by local artists,” stated Enma Saiz, “It is a wonderful representation of the talent brewing in South Florida.”

Her latest piece “Eleven Twenty-Seven” is a commentary about the plight of garment workers. "Consumers need to be conscientious about buying cheap clothes, because somewhere, someone is paying the price," said Saiz. "Eleven Twenty-Seven" is about the Rana Plaza Building collapse in Bangladesh in 2013 where over 1127 workers lost their lives, and more have died subsequently. Even after the tragedy, many top American companies did not sign a safety accord to protect Bangladeshi workers in the future. "Consumers have the power to make important changes," said Saiz, "This piece is a reminder of what happened, and what companies choose to ignore health and safety violations impacting garment workers."

Saiz’s “She Is A Pill” piece is a pop art nod to the 50th anniversaries of the birth control pill, hair color in a box and Barbie. It features 50 images of a Barbie-inspired character wearing a birth control pill container hat and sporting 50 different hair colors. “It celebrates women's reproductive freedom as well as freedom of identity,” says Saiz, “These were big, life-changing events for women, so I knew I needed to make the piece an extreme size.” The acrylic on canvas piece measures 70 x 36 inches.

The BIG! exhibition will be at the ArtServe Gallery located at 1350 E Sunrise Blvd in Fort Lauderdale for the entire month of October 2015.

About Enma Saiz

Enma Saiz was born in Cuba in 1965 and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She earned her medical degree in 1994 at the University of Miami, Florida. In 2013, after battling breast cancer, Saiz left her medical career as a successful pathologist to focus on her art. “It was the wake-up call everyone talks about in their lives,” says Enma who was diagnosed with cancer when her children were both under the age of 10, “I promised myself that if I survived, I would focus on what I love – and that is my family and art.”

As a pathologist, Saiz made a career of studying human tissues to identify patterns that revealed typical behaviors of disease. The study of patterns can be seen in her art today. The meaning of pathology stems from the Greek word “pathos” which means “experience” or “suffering”. Saiz’s art often captures the pathos, the suffering and experiences, of people and communities.
