Gatwick hotel resurrected on The Block

Infamous Gatwick hotel resurrected

Situated on Fitzroy Street, in the heart of downtown St Kilda in Melbourne, art deco hotel the Gatwick suffered years of neglect before five couples from The Block undertook its massive renovation.

Over an intensive and challenging three-month period, the couples remodelled two penthouses and four apartments – transforming them into show-stopping, three-bedroom, two-bathroom homes with sweeping views of Melbourne. It’s no wonder this season delivered outstanding auction results ranging between $2.770m and $3.020m.

With an aim to return the façade of the once rundown hotel to its former glory, fresh and bright rendering breathes new life into the exterior; whilst maintaining the original heritage features that the Gatwick building is famous for. Each apartment pays homage to the property’s heritage and acknowledges the diverse inner-city suburb in which it’s located.

The two top floor penthouse apartments feature four-metre ceilings with skylights allowing for an abundance of natural light to flood the spaces. Banks of floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate open-plan interiors, with luxurious kitchens complete with a butler’s pantry and state-of-the-art appliances. Beautiful parquetry and herringbone flooring, give the penthouses a unique and elegant point of difference and spectacular, large terraces showcase the best of outdoor living.

On the floors below, sit four stunning dwellings boasting large-scale living spaces, ideal for entertaining, alongside alfresco terraces designed for use all year round. Each home features fully equipped kitchens and butler pantries, proving that luxury living is not just exclusive to the penthouse apartments.

Partnering for over five years, CSR Gyprock was again selected as the preferred internal linings supplier, appearing alongside a number of other CSR building products, including Bradford insulation, Monier roof tiles and AFS formwork.

With contestants once again battling a strict budget and tight timeframe for the project, Gyprock’s products and service offering allowed contestants to continuously meet demands of delivery times without sacrificing the quality of the build.

Gyprock Plus plasterboard lines the walls of the building’s interiors, with Gyprock Supaceil fixed to the ceilings throughout. Both products feature Optimised Core manufacturing technology, making them significantly lighter with greater breaking strength. They’re also easy to handle, install and deliver long lasting results. Plus and Supaceil are fixed and jointed with premium Gyprock compounds and adhesives.

Gyprock is proud to come back for another year to support The Block with quality plaster products that helped deliver these stunning apartments,” says Alisha Mykytowycz, Gyprock Marketing Communications and Brand Manager.

Guaranteed to stand the test of time, Gyprock plasterboard comes with 25 year warranty, giving the lucky new homeowners peace of mind.
