COVID damaged many parent child relationships: Parents urgently need to repair the damage

  • Written by: Tess Sanders Lazarus

Being a parent is often described as being the toughest job of all. Every parent wants the best for their child, but it’s not always easy to help children navigate through the chronicles of their lives, and it became even more difficult during COVID.

Rose Milani, a parenting coach and founder of a new parent coaching counselling program is calling on parents to take action to address parent child relationship challenges before they escalate out of hand.

“I have worked for many years as a mental health worker and I have seen the way that many parents struggle to form good relationships with their children. Unfortunately many simply didn’t know who they could turn to for support and help,” Ms Milani said.

“I became a parent coach to help break the cycle of miscommunication between parent and child. As a parent myself, there have been many times in my life that I wanted to talk to someone because I was just so overwhelmed, or perhaps I just needed the reassurance on some of the decisions I had made in regards to parenting.

“It would have made a world of a difference to me, if I had someone, not just empathetic, but also trained and qualified to give me the guidance that I so desperately needed.

“Many parents are already doing an amazing job, but they just need a bit of positive reinforcement, or someone to bounce off ideas in a safe space. This is where I can come in and help with de-escalation techniques, handling bullies, assertiveness, handling peer pressure and communications skills with kids.”

Parent coaching services

“Being based out of Benalla, in Victoria, I’ve decided to offer my services online so that I can help anyone in Australia,” Ms Milani said.

“The reality is that technology has made it possible for parents to receive help no matter where they live. Getting help online is also convenient and enables busy parents to access the support they need without having to leave the house.”

Ms Milani offers a range of different packages for parents.

“When it comes to parenting, I understand that every family is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. That’s why I individualise each session for every family I meet with so that I can work with you to come up with solutions that are right for your family and that can work with the different personalities in your family,” Ms Milani added.

“There is no magic solution, but through my Tailored Parenting Coaching (TPC) services, I’ll work with you and your family to discuss the issues that you want to tackle.”

Creating healthy relationships by breaking the cycle of toxicity

“I have worked as a mental health counsellor for many years and have come across families of all ages and shapes and sizes, who’ve all said that their lives would have turned out differently, if they had had a better relationship with their parents,” Ms Milani said.

“The consequences of bad parenting can follow a child into adulthood and have lasting repercussions. I myself raised in Uganda in a dysfunctional a single parent household. My father abused alcohol and any money he earned went towards serving his addiction rather than feeding us. The only way out of this vicious cycle was through the power of education, so I made it my mission to stay in school.

“For high school, I moved to Malawi and was involved in the Save the Children charitable organisation which really opened my eyes to the fact that nothing is permanent and that circumstances can change. We are not meant to go through life by ourselves, and we all need a helping hand every now and then. Whatever your own relationship with your parent was, it doesn’t have to be the way forward.

“With a bit of help and counselling and commitment to change, I can help you to unlock the best inside of you and bring it to the centre of your family.

“Since coming to Australia in 2012, I have come across people of all walks of life who take things for granted and don’t take advantage of the privilege and opportunities that Australia has in abundance. Sometimes they just need someone coming from a different perspective to help them gain the perspective needed to put their lives together.”

Parenting with passion

“I am very passionate about helping people, especially parents, bring out the best in their children; and don’t forget that parenthood doesn’t end when your children become adults. I’ve helped numerous parents reconnect with estranged sons and daughters after all hope seemed lost,” Ms Milani said.

“Raising children is the most difficult life-long challenge that many of us go through. If you’re struggling to build the relationships you deserve to have in your life, let me help you, and we’ll get through this together.”
