Why It's a Good Idea to Study a Trade

  • Written by: Shan Ge

When you are a kid, so many people ask you the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" For many people, that question can vary throughout time. You have the phase where you want to be an astronaut, then a famous ballerina, then a truck driver, then an Olympic athlete. Perhaps you were one of those kids that loved playing with your construction trucks or always loved to work with your mini toolbox. Lucky for you, those interests can turn into booming career paths.

Many people assume going to college and doing a traditional nine-to-five job is the only way to be financially successful. This couldn't be further from the truth. There are so many skilled trades you can learn to build your career off of. You can study anything from electrical work, plumbing, construction, medical tech, or welding just to name a few. Following this path can lead to a number of potential careers doing something you actually enjoy. Here are just a few of the main reasons why you should consider studying a trade.

Save time and money on your education.

Going to college costs a ton of money and takes a long time before you can officially start your career. A great perk of learning a trade is the shortened time it takes to get a technical certificate. Rather than pursuing higher education at a university, you will go to an educational institution to learn the technical skills to become a technician or contractor or whatever other trade interests you.

An Automotive and Diesel Technology program will teach you how to work in the automotive industry and fix car and truck mechanics while an electrician can teach you about electrical systems at a trade school in that field. You just need to meet assessment standards and understand your field to start your career. This is a simple and straightforward path compared to other options you may consider.

Learn a trade that everyone will need at some point.

When you learn a skilled trade, you are becoming an expert in something not everyone knows about. However, most people will need help from a skilled technician at some point in time. Homeowners need electricians and contractors. Hospitals need med techs. Drivers need engine repair experts. Whether you're an electrical contractor in Dillsburg, PA, or a construction worker in Miami, FL, you'll have a sense of job security. People will always rely on your services to help with these specialized situations.

You can make a great living.

Pursuing a career in the trade industry doesn't mean taking a pay cut. In fact, working as a technician, electrician, or contractor can yield high financial returns. When you possess a strong set of technical skills, you can demand a higher price for your services.

Most tradespeople end up making salaries over $50,000 a year with the room to grow as their career goes on. Plus, there is always a high demand for skilled workers, so you'll never be stuck looking for works. With so many available jobs, you should be able to find something quite easily.

Get to do something you actually enjoy.

If you are interested in a skilled trade, chances are you like to work with your hands. The idea of sitting at a desk all day may sound terribly boring to you. One reason to join the trade industry is so that you can do work you actually enjoy. Have fun working with your hands and using construction equipment. Being happy at your job is something so many people take for granted, so look for available jobs where you can enjoy your day-to-day.
