10 useful packing tips when moving to a new house

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

The time that you realize you have tons of stuff in your house, you will realize how overwhelming moving a house can be. Every step you will take is challenging. And one of the most stressful parts is packing your things. You need to systematically go to every room of your house until all your belongings are packed. If you are not organized, things might be harder for you. Fortunately, there is some packing strategy that allows you to save time and frustration. Following these packing tips to make your move run smoothly.

1. Look for the right removalist early

As soon as you know that you are moving, we suggest looking for removal companies. If you are in Australia, hiring a removal company is much easier. Booking in advance giving you more chances that you can move to your new home at your desired schedule. This is crucial, especially during the moving season. Contact the company early to know their terms of service. You will also have time to compare fees if you contact the company early.

2. Gather the moving supplies you need

Before you start packing, make sure you have all the tools you need for packing. This will include boxes, bubble wrap, tapes, and scissors. You can buy cheap moving boxes online. You can also ask your neighbors and friends if they have spare used boxes. Just make sure that the boxes are in good condition. Apart from this, you can buy the other supplies you need at a department store or office supply.

3. Pack like things together

Doing this will not only allow you to be organized in packing, but it can also help you save a lot of work when you have to unpack your belongings to your new home. Use some paddings such as bubble wrap, newspaper, or blankets to protect your stuff while moving. When packing, it is easier to put first the largest or heaviest item into the box.

4. Get rid of the things you don’t need

You probably have a lot of belongings in your house, but as you are packing, you will find some things in there that you are not using for years. Consider throwing them away or donate them to charity. Doing this will help you save a lot of space and work.

5. Use color-coded boxes

As mentioned, you need to be as organized as possible when you are packing your things for moving. This packing strategy will be very helpful to you. By color-coding the boxes, you can easily identify which room they belong in.

6. Label each box

Another packing strategy that will help you be more organized is by using labels on the box. Label each box with its content and the room to which the box belongs. You can put your label on the top and the side of the box. However, if your box contains some valuable items like jewelry, it might be better to use code names. Do this even though you trust the removalist that will handle your package.

7. Defrost your fridge ahead of time

You need to defrost your refrigerator at least 48 hours before moving. You want your packages to travel dry. The water from the melted ice on your fridge can harm the other boxes if it spills out. So make sure everything is dry when you packed your belongings.

8. Dismantle your flat-pack furniture or appliance

Disassemble your furniture and electronic appliances when you are moving to your house. Not only does that you will save you a lot of space, but you will also protect them while traveling. Some furniture and appliances are not built to be moved. Some of them may fall apart even at the slightest provocation.

Use plastic bags to collect screws and cords, then label everything. It is also useful to take a picture of furniture or appliances before dismantling. Photograph the cords and all other small details to help you remember where all the wires go and reassemble them faster.

9. Don’t water your plant before moving
Watering your plant can add some weight to your package. Some water may also drip down to other boxes if you water the plant on the actual day of moving. We advise not to do this at least a day before the schedule.

10. Get in touch with your mover

It is important to get in touch with your mover before and on the actual day of the move. Make sure to inform them about dangerous and fragile items they need to keep an eye on. Just a bonus tip, be polite and respect them as they are the ones who will be taking care of your valuables while moving.
