It is on the sofa that you entertain the guests. It is on the sofa that your kids play. It is on the sofa where you occasionally eat. It is on the sofa that your pets sit. It is on the sofa where you watch TV.

The living room sofa is where we do a lot of things and as a result, it can be one of the dirtiest furniture in the home. Even if it is a new one, the sofa can accumulate all kinds of dirt so quickly before you've had the chance to flaunt it. To keep your sofa looking clean and most of all, healthy and free from any germs, you need to clean it regularly.

For cleaning your sofa, there are professional cleaners who provide good services. But how many times in a year can you afford to get such cleaners? You can also clean your sofa on your own with the same efficiency as the professional cleaners with just a few cleaning hacks. Eager to know what they are? Read on to find out.

Vacuum Your Sofa

No matter what kind of sofa you have, vacuuming it will get rid of all the dust and the dry dirt on it. Before you use any kind of liquid on the sofa, it is important to vacuum out as much dirt as you can. Else, when you next use a cleaning mixture, the dirt and the solution will mix and form a grime which will be difficult to remove.

If you have a fabric sofa, this grime could be even more difficult to remove and there are possibilities of staining the fabric. For a leather sofa, this step will help in removing a majority of the dirt from the sofa. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove all the dirt from the sofa including all the folds and crevices. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment for maximum results.

Check The Allowed Cleaning Materials

Every sofa comes with a tag which denotes which cleaning materials can and cannot be used for cleaning. Do not make the mistake of blindly following the online hacks without checking if the sofa is allowed to be cleaned with that. For example, ‘W’ denotes it can be cleaned with water while ‘X’ means it can only be vacuumed. Similarly, there are separate codes denoting what materials can be used to clean it.

Removing The Stubborn Stains

If you are using the living room sofa for quite some time, then you are bound to have stains on it. These stains could give your sofa the look of an old one no matter how stylish it looks.

To remove the unwanted stains from a fabric sofa, make a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to wash off all the stains. You can also store this in a spray bottle and give an overall clean to the entire sofa to remove the dullness and make it look brighter as a new one.

For a leather sofa, you can try the baking soda for natural stains. In case the stains are hard to remove, mix lemon juice with cream of tartar in equal quantities. Use this paste on the stubborn stains and leave it for some time. Wipe it off with a cloth and you can see all the stains disappearing.

Removing Bad Odours

Due to all the spilt food and the sweat accumulated on the living room sofa, it could smell bad. This could affect the smell of the entire room. If you are worried about the smelling sofa, here is an easy tip to help you.

Just sprinkle some dry baking soda all over the sofa especially in the areas where the dirt will be accumulated. Leave it for 30 minutes and vacuum all the powder. The baking soda will absorb all the odour from the sofa giving it a fresh smell.

Bringing Back The Shine

When you haven’t cleaned your sofa over some time, it will lose its lustre and look dull. A dull living room sofa in the middle of the room isn’t something you would want. To bring back the shine to your leather sofa, mix four parts of olive oil with one part of vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray it all over the leather sofa, let it sit for some time before wiping it all with a soft cloth. Your sofa will look as good as a brand new one!

For a fabric sofa, cleaning the surface of the sofa isn’t sufficient. The dirt would have penetrated deep inside the soda. To clean that, use a steam cleaner all over the sofa. The steam will loosen up the cloth threads which will allow the dirt to come out. After this, you can use baking soda and vinegar mixture to wipe it off if the sofa is wet or vacuum it directly if the sofa is dry.

The sofa is the central piece of furniture in your living room and it is important to keep it clean. You can use these few simple tips and hacks to keep your sofa in perfect condition without having to shell out big bucks on professional cleaning services.
