How to Keep Stair Rugs Stable

  • Written by: Digital360

Are you the type of person that loves the look of stair rugs but has a hard time having them stay on the stairs without people tripping over them?

Do you worry about the dangers of stair rugs?

Well think again, we might have an option that will solve all your pesky stair rug problems. Stair Treads are a great way to help keep the rug in place.

Are you interested in learning more? If so, continue reading to find out how to keep stair rugs stable!

Applying Double-Sided Tape to Stair Treads

When applying double-sided tape you should always start with the edges of the rug. Cut four pieces of tape and use them for each edge of the stair tread. You'll just need to remember to remove the backing from one side of the tape.

Carefully place the tape onto the edges of the back of the treads. Then you're ready to apply the other strips of tape to the centre.

Put the tread at the centre of the bottom step of the staircase and then press the tape onto the stairs to have the tread in place. Using double-sided tape will ensure that the tread and rug are secure where they lay. You can't go wrong with extra coverage.

Carpet Tacks

Another way to set stair treads into your rug is with carpet tacks. If your stairs already have a carpet style matting this is a perfect option for you!

To make sure that the carpet tacks are doing their job, insert three tacks at the centre of the tread and then another four for each corner.

This is a great choice if you don't want to use adhesive. Carpet tacks can be useful for hardwood and laminate stairs. You should note that the tacks leave holes in the floors.

Carpet Stair Tread Adhesive

Before using a tread adhesive make sure to clean and dry each stair surface thoroughly. It's best to use a terrycloth or microfiber mop to completely dry off the area. Place the adhesive onto the back of each stair tread and press them into place.

If you want to get the stair treads more firmly in place use brad nails along the back.

Attaching a Rod Bracket

To keep your stair rug stable it helps to assemble a rod bracket to each stair.

Apply the bracket to both the edges of the runner and at the intersection of the tread and riser. Hold the brackets in place and mark the screw hole areas so you know where to drill the pilot holes.

Then you'll screw each bracket to tread and riser. Measure the rods and cut them down to the size that you need. You can cut the rods with a hacksaw or tubing cutter.

Finish by putting both ends of the rods securely into the brackets.
